To produce a high quality material 3d printing is not the first method you would think of. The surfaces of the (often used FDM) prints feel rough and looking thourgh a microscope, the material shows to be porous full of internal spaces. These material properties are less than ideal to produce woodwind instruments.
The consumer-grade alternative is resin printing called SLA which produces objects with high quality like injection molding i.e. smooth, non-porous and dense. The first SLA drone was made in september 2025 and is being tested to see how it holds during use and transport.
The first observation is that the drone feels much like Delrin (POM) which is already well established in Scottish piping. The drone gives a solid, rigid feel and sounds accordingly. Within the first week of test driving the SLA version of the shuttle drone I decided to focus on this technique for (final) production.
